AZAHAR- Rebeca Ortega Flamenco Dance Show from Spain

Join us for a night of passion, rhythm, and intensity – an unforgettable authentic flamenco performance by Seville’s elegant and accomplished dancer, Rebeca Ortega, UK’s leading flamenco guitarist Ramón Ruiz, accompanied by the deeply soulful voice of Belén de los Reyes also from Seville.

Don’t miss out on this opportunity to immerse yourself in the rich cultural heritage of Andalusia, with traditional and modern flamenco artistry.

From the deepest roots of flamenco, this theatrically spun dance show is born from the tradition of flamenco culture, shaped by the luminosity of the alegrías, the depth of the taranto and seguiriya, the rhythms of the tangos and bulerías and the jondura of the soleá and the farruca.

Rebeca Ortega flamenco company has captivated international audiences with the recent production “AZAHAR”, finalist in the “Madroño” Young Dance Creators Contest and financed by the Spanish Ministry of  Foreign Affairs and the Madrid network of theaters.

The production has travelled throughout all of Europe, as well as to stages as far away as China, Gabon, Ethiopia, Malaysia, Trinidad and Tobago, offering performances and master classes, and is delighted to come to The Barbican for an unmissable night.

“Excited for our return to The Acorn! Last year was magical in this stunning town and theatre, and I anticipate another memorable performance on Friday 21st of June.” – Rebeca Ortega

She has it all: Beauty, a stylised and flexible body, elegance, finesse, charisma, rhythmic sense that prints a way of dancing with its own identity. Rebeca Ortega’s dance defines her . . .” – Aquí Madrid

“. . . she is the imperious, dancing focal point, her steps beating furious, intricate tattoos under a long train that she swishes, lifts and manoeuvres with marvellous dexterity and no little significance . . .” – Herald Scotland

About Rebeca Ortega – Flamenco dancer and diriector:

“She has it all: Beauty, a stylised and flexible body, elegance, finesse, charisma, a rhythmic sense that prints a way of dancing with its own identity. Rebeca Ortega’s dance defines her…” – Written by Aquí Madrid.
Rebeca Ortega is a notable Spanish flamenco dancer and director of her company with a long trajectory which has led her to perform and direct workshops in England, Wales, Scotland, Denmark, Portugal, France, Belgium, Norway, Germany, Switzerland, China, and Gabon (Africa).
Rebeca has trained extensively in flamenco, classical Spanish dance, ballet, and contemporary dance in prestigious dance schools such as the Professional Conservatory of Dance, Seville, or the most recognised flamenco schools, Madrid’s Amor de Dios and Seville’s Flamenco Danza.
Aged 19, Rebeca began her professional career, and for four years she performed and taught flamenco in the UK while completing her university studies, which led her to create, direct, and choreograph the group “Nottingham Flamenquitas”.
As part of the flamenco company Teatro Flamenco La Tati, Rebeca performed in “A mi manera” (My Way), directed by internationally recognised flamenco dancer and choreographer La Tati, at Madrid’s Teatro Conde Duque in 2015.
Also notable is her work as a solo dancer in international flamenco guitarist Ricardo García’s company, where she participated in four productions at the C Venues Theatre as part of the 2016 and 2017 Edinburgh Fringe Festivals, all of which received prestigious reviews and awards.
From 2017, Rebeca travels to Denmark to perform and research on the “Rendez-vous” production, a duet show with circus artist Villads Bugge Bang, performing an original piece that plays with flamenco dance, body percussion, circus, and physical theatre.
In 2019, Rebeca undertook her first UK tour with her production “Callejondo” (Alley), and during the pandemic, her project “FlamenCaravana” was televised in Spain.
From 2022, Rebeca collaborated with other renowned artists, including the famous Spanish jazz fusion group Patáx – when she combines the dance movements of Michael Jackson with flamenco – and performs frequently at the renowned London Jazz Café as part of the Ramón Ruiz Ensemble.
In 2023 she undertook an extensive and very successful UK tour with “RAÍCES”.
Following her participation in 2021’s Suma Flamenca Joven at the Teatros del Canal, Rebeca premiered “RAÍCES” at the Teatro La Fundificación in Seville. The show was the third finalist in Madrid’s Young Creators in Dance Madroño Contest. As a consequence of being selected for the AECID catalogue by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Spanish Cooperation, “RAÍCES” has travelled to tour Germany, Switzerland, China, and Gabon (Africa) with the collaboration of the Spanish Embassy. Before the end of the year 2023, more tours are planned to Ethiopia, Malasia and Trinidad and Tobago. Last week, “RAÍCES” was also presented at prestigious flamenco festival.
