Event Description
Monsterland, with Nick Jubber
A previous winner of the Stanford/Dolman Travel Book Award, Nick Jubber takes us to Monsterland. This, his latest book, is a journey around the world’s dark imagination with a mixture of travel, nature-writing, history and mythology, exploring how monsters are rooted in landscapes and history. His tales are gleaned from reams of historical research and wonderful storytelling: at a werewolf festival in Louisiana, at a Bavarian dragon-slaying drama, in Mexico during Day of the Dead and a night in a vampire’s mill in the Balkans. Closer to home, stories from Cornish folklore include the giants Bolster and (one of his favourites) Holiburn of Carn Galver.
