Event Description
Live music at The Acorn Theatre, Penzance, on Thursday, 23rd January, with an exciting double bill! Headlining is Southern Fried Groove Queens, a Devon-based, Mississippi Hill Country, and Delta blues-inspired duo featuring Lee Hall on guitar and vocals, and renowned blues drummer Lucy Piper, daughter of the late blues musician Julian Piper “one of the UK’s foremost champions of African-American blues” The Guardian.
The duo play their take on the likes of old masters such as RL Burnside, John Lee Hooker, Robert Johnson and more. Formed in 2021, they have already played many of the UK’s leading blues and jazz festivals, taking audiences by storm. In 2023 the band played at Ørland Blues Festival in Norway, where Bluesnews described their performance as “a fantastic concert that left many jaws dropping.”
A recent review by Mid Wales RnB Club attested, “Lucy and Lee play together brilliantly, with amazing and irrepressible energy, displaying an uncanny ability to follow one another’s moves. They manage to take some of the absolute all-time blues standards and reinterpret them in their own up-tempo style whilst never compromising the authenticity of the originals.”
Joining them will be Stompin’ Dave. Dave was nominated for a UK Blues Award 2024 and described as “one of the world’s greatest performers” by Maverick Magazine. The Bridport, Dorset-based multi-instrumentalist has garnered appearances at many festivals, including some major ones such as Glastonbury, Camp Bestival, and Bestival.
Dave has released many well-received blues albums and regularly performs at blues festivals and clubs across the UK. He is a former member of The Producers, the former UK blues band of the year. Dave’s vast repertoire ranges from traditional songs and tunes to vintage covers and his own originals.
“Let‘s face it, in adding the quality of his original material the man is a downright genius“ Blues In Britain “In other parts of the world they have cyclones, tornados and hurricanes, in the UK we have Stompin’ Dave…a phenomenal artist” Blues In The South.
Do not miss what promises to be a top night! Music starts at 8pm. Advance tickets are available from the Acorn Theatre box office
