100 years ago, Jack Leslie became the first black footballer to be selected for England – but he was then dropped due to the colour of his skin. Author Matt Tiller tells Jack’s moving story with archive photos from Jack’s East London childhood, glory at Plymouth Argyle (137 goals in 400 games) and a bittersweet epilogue at West Ham United… where, as part of the support team, he cleaned Bobby Moore’s boots. Matt’s heartbreaking but inspiring biography, The Lion Who Never Roared, includes a foreword by Viv Anderson, who finally became the first black footballer to win a full England cap in 1978.
