Event Description
The Sleep Room: A Very British Medical Scandal, with Jon Stock
An established writer, under the pen name J.S.Monroe, of psychological thrillers, including Find Me and No Place To Hide, Jon Stock talks about The Sleep Room, his first foray into non-fiction. Exposing a scandal at the heart of the British medical establishment, Jon has investigated Dr William Sargant, a reckless NHS psychiatrist who also worked for the intelligence services. A global expert on brainwashing, during the 1960s, Sargant put young female patients to sleep for months, giving them ECT while they slept. Jon’s book is a chilling exposé of Sargant’s bizarre psychiatric treatments. These were inflicted, without their consent and often with horrific side-effects, on hundreds of women with mental illness (including the actor Celia Imrie), who have campaigned for many years for the truth to be told about Sargant.
